Staff in school will:
Report any inappropriate behaviour / activities to designated staff.
Establish and maintain an environment where children feel secure, are encouraged to talk and are listened to.
Ensure that children know that they can approach any adult in school if they are worried and they will receive a consistent, supportive response.
Provide, within the PSHE curriculum, opportunities for children to develop the skills they need to recognise, and stay safe, from abuse. Sometimes we may need to share information and work in partnership with other agencies, when there are concerns about a child’s welfare. We will ensure that our concerns are discussed with parents/carers first, unless we have reason to believe that such a move would be contrary to the child’s welfare.
Bullying can present as verbal, physical, emotional or psychological behaviour by an individual or group which hurts another individual or group – it generally, but not always, is repeated and is an abuse of power.
At The Stonebridge School we believe that there is no place for bullying in any form. We aim to ensure that the whole school community understands the devastating effect all types of bullying can have on the emotional wellbeing of pupils, parents and staff. We believe that all individuals should feel safe and free from any intimidation or the threatening actions or words of others. We will collectively strive for the eradication of bullying, this is both online and bullying that may occur in school or off the school site. The school will implement the Consequences Flow Chart when dealing with bullying and through our curriculum and shared values ensure that all children are taught how to keep safe and also implement the British Values in their daily lives.
The Prevent Duty is an aspect of safeguarding which focuses on violent extremism/terrorism. Our aim is to build community resilience against hateful and harmful narratives that are espoused by violent extremist/terrorist organisations. It is the responsibility of educators to report victims of grooming into extremist narratives and groups. We promote freedom of speech within the limitations of the 2010 Equality Act which strengthened government powers against ‘hate speech’ and ‘minority discrimination’.
The Prevent strategy has existed in various forms since 2007.
The Prevent Duty – From 1 July 2015 the Counter Terrorism and Security Act placed a new statutory duty on schools, LAs and other specified authorities and institutions, to prevent people being drawn into terrorism and extremism. Since 2012, it has been required by law for teachers “not to undermine fundamental British values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.” The Ofsted inspection framework ,which was updated in September 2019, sets out expectations on preventing extremism. It directs inspectors to examine a school’s response to extremist behaviour when considering the behaviour and safety of pupils, as well as the effectiveness of the leadership and management of the school in preventing extremism. The Government has strengthened these provisions in the October 2019 Ofsted inspection which highlights the importance of protecting minority groups against hatred based on the 2010 Equality Act.
Online Safety
Online Safety is all about being aware of the possible dangers and risks associated with using the Internet. It also covers the use of electronic and online communication and wireless technology. It is vital, that children and adults, learn how to use the Internet responsibly and make informed choices that will equip to make better decisions now and in the future. At The Stonebridge School we adhere to the code of conduct as specified in our school Online-Safety Policy and Acceptable Use Policies which are agreed by all children and staff.
